    Plea to Mayor Tate

    Tom Tate

    Mayor GCCC

    Dear Tom,

I am the President of Miami Masters Swimming Club. The club has for many years trained & held Masters swimming carnivals at the Miami pool which, as you know, is being redeveloped. We have also for many years had the use of a small shed at the pool where we have kept a fridge, an electric jug, some other appliances, & various gear such as chairs & tables. After training sessions this area has been used for members to get together & socialise for an hour or so, & has also served as a means of introducing new members to the club. With the pool redevelopment we are keen to ensure there will remain such a facility.

When talking to a longstanding friend, John Brent, about this he said “give Tom Tate a call & tell him I said he’s an action man”. Hence this email, as I don’t have your mobile number – mine is 0407 546 364.

As you know, Masters Swimming provides a valuable community function. It encourages people of all ages to be active. Miami Masters includes members who have various disabilities - autistic, hearing impaired, loss of a limb & so on, & they have always been welcome. On a competitive basis the Club has over many years been very successful, & has a couple of members who are World Champions, with many State, National & world records held by past & present members.

I understand you are moving to Buccaneer Court, Paradise Waters – John Crisp a Life Member of our Club & his wife Bernice will be your new neighbours - they live at 38 Buccaneer Court. John has been a very successful swimmer with our Club over many years, & holds many World records. I have spoken to John & you may be prevailed upon to join the Club!

Miami Masters has a longstanding good relationship with the Miami Amateur swimming club, & has over many years assisted that club with its activities, including providing timekeepers & officials for its carnivals.

Any assistance or guidance you can provide on how best the Club can ensure the continuing availability of a clubroom from the time the new pool opens to the public would be appreciated. One cannot over-emphasise the post training social aspect of the club as a catalyst for membership. Club members are willing helpers& if we can assist in some way by fitting out such a clubroom I am sure many members would put up their hands. The important thing is to get such a facility.

If you would like further information please give me a call.

    Regards,

    David

    Dear David

Thank you for your email addressed to the Mayor regarding the Miami Masters Swim Club. The Mayor has asked that I respond on his behalf.

The Aquatics management team have confirmed that Miami Masters have previously enjoyed the use of facilities at Miami Aquatic Centre for club activities and social gatherings, informally referred to as “Lane 11”.

I have also been advised that throughout the lengthy master planning, detailed design and construction phases of the redevelopment, the City has engaged with key stakeholders and regular user groups of the centre such as Miami Masters.

I can confirm that both the master plan and detailed design of the centre does not provide for leased areas, dedicated spaces or liquor licencing provisions for exclusive use by individual user groups. This was communicated to the previous President and Vice-President of Miami Masters during the various stages of the masterplan and detailed design of the redevelopment.

Once complete, Miami Aquatic Centre will provide various common spaces that are accessible to multiple user groups not just from the centre, but more broadly across the Pizzey Park precinct. I am sure you will agree that this presents a responsible approach and a fair and equitable opportunity for all sporting groups such as Miami Masters to utilise the new and much improved facilities which is in line with other aquatic centres across the City.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact the Office of the Mayor.

    Kind regards

Luke Wallace Acting Chief of Staff Office of the Mayor City of Gold Coast T: (07) 5581 5283 PO Box 5042 Gold Coast Mail Centre Qld 9726 cityofgoldcoast.com.au
